Newsmagazines

In 2019, Carlmont Journalism decided to start publishing a newsmagazine rather than a newspaper and a magazine. I worked on transitioning the program to this new format and became Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Highlander newsmagazine. We published the first issue in May 2019. Every issue has a cover story at the center of the newsmagazine. This cover story, Scotlight, is named after the magazine Carlmont Journalism used to publish. Scotlight tells a more in-depth story in four to six pages. The rest of the newsmagazine is composed of articles our staff writers want to write, and they choose these stories based on what they think the community wants to or should hear.

This is not the end

Vol. XI Issue VII

May 2020

This issue was severely altered due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Before this point in the academic year, staff-members had been assigned to write, edit, and design for either an odd or even issue — I was the Editor-in-Chief for the odd issues. However, the beginning of the pandemic and quarantine which sent us all home from school altered our schedule for the original Issue VII. Instead of rushing production of Issue VIII, we decided to combine our staff and create a larger Issue VII which included the articles intended to be in Issue VIII. The printing process was delayed and complicated due to the pandemic, and our final issue came out much later than anticipated. As the cover suggests, we also altered the centerpiece of the issue to focus on the impact of the pandemic.

Vol. XI Issue V

February 14, 2020

This issue's centerpiece focuses on the question of love. Click on the image to read the full newsmagazine.

Vol. XI Issue III

November 15, 2019

This issue's cover story focuses on the idea of having fun in high school. Our publications often discuss high school stress much more than they discuss fun, so we thought that telling a more positive story would be a good change for our community. Within the Scotlight story, different students have the opportunity to discuss how they have fun both in and outside of school.

Vol. XI Issue II

October 25, 2019

The cover story of this issue of Highlander newsmagazine discusses school spirit and the incorrect belief that going to football games is the only form of spirit. In reality, every school-related or school-affiliated activity is a form of spirit, including sports, robotics, and clubs. This cover was designed by my Co-Editor-in-Chief, Emma Romanowsky.

Vol. XI Issue I

September 27, 2019

This was the first issue of Volume XI, our first full volume of Highlander newsmagazines. Our cover and center story, Scotlight, focuses on the environmentalist movement. We focus on both the real aspects of environmentalism, such as Greta Thunberg's activism, and the more superficial environmentalism like metal straws. This first issue was a huge success and I'm proud of the way we started the year.

Inaugural Issue

May 22, 2019

This was our first issue of Highlander newsmagazine. For the inaugural issue, we created a new production process, including new deadlines and responsibilities for writers and editors alike. We transitioned to a newsmagazine so we could bring feature articles to our community in more visually appealing ways. Our center spread, Scotlight, is named after Carlmont's former magazine. This issue's Scotlight section focused on growing up, and it explains to our graduating seniors some of the things school never formally taught them. The design is based on Monopoly, and the front cover reflects that theme.
